Abstract
The great industrial growth in the oil and chemical industries and the
desire to provide additional sources of energy creates additional
pressure on the sources of fresh water, and if we know that the oil and
chemical industry is one of the industries that consume large quantities
of water, then it has become necessary for a place to research and
study this problem, know its dimensions and develop solutions The study
problem was summarized by four questions: What is the role of water in
the oil and chemical industry in Basra Governorate? What are the most
important stages in which the oil and chemical industry depends on
water? And are the water resources in Basra Governorate able to supply
the oil and chemical industry with its basic requirements of water? Are
there alternatives to the current water resources for use in the oil and
chemical industries in Basra Governorate?.
The study aims to try to uncover how the role and use of water in the
oil and chemical industry in Basra Governorate and its future prospects,
to know the most important water pumping stations for the oil and
chemical industries, their geographical distribution and classification,
to know the most important stages in which water enters as a basic
factor in the oil and chemical industry, and to know the quantities of
production and whether they are proportionate Directly with water
consumption, the study relied on a set of research methods, including:
the historical approach, the descriptive approach: to shed light on the
nature of industrial processes and industrial stages, and the systematic
approach: through choosing one industrial branch represented by the oil
and chemical industries.
The study dealt with the historical development of the oil and
chemical industries in Basra Governorate. The study also dealt with
methods of water treatment and its uses in the oil and chemical
industries. The study also dealt with the geographical distribution of
water pumping stations in the oil and chemical industries in Basra
Governorate. The study also dealt with the classification of water
pumping stations in Basra Petroleum and chemical industries in Basra
Governorate. The study also addressed future prospects for using water
in the oil and chemical industries.
The study found a set of results. The forties of the last century
witnessed the start of extractive oil production in Basra Governorate,
with the start of production in the Zubair oil field in 1949, and the
beginning of the fifties of the last century witnessed the start of
transformational oil production by establishing the first refinery in
Basra Governorate, represented by the Muftiya Refinery. In 1953, it also
concluded that the (extractive) oil industry did not require at the
beginning of its establishment large quantities of water - except for
the use of water in the drilling of oil wells and ancillary services -
and the need for water use in it increases after the continuation of
production and the pressure of oil reservoirs decreased to the degree
that it depends In it, the amount of production is based on the amount
of water injected into the oil field to continue the production
process.
And that there is a link between the start of the
petroleum-transformative industry and the chemical industries and the
use of water in it, because water is used as a raw material in many
chemical industries, such as the manufacture of various acids or the
chemical analysis industry, etc. The emergence of this industry and the
use of water in it.
The study also found that there are three stages of treatment that
water passes through to become suitable for industrial transformative
uses, namely the primary treatment stage, the desalination stage -R.O or
reverse osmosis units - and the ionic treatment stage of industrial
water, and there is a direct relationship between production and the
amount of water used in the manufacture of industrial processes.
