The Energy in the Governorate of Suez
A study in Economic Geography
Using Geographical Information Systems

Abstract

This thesis investigates the geography of energy in SuezGovernorate, with the application of geographic information systems(GIS). The study consists of five chapters, preceded by an introduction and concluding with a conclusion and recommendations.

Chapter I studies the production of energy in Suez Governorate. This chapter is divided into two sections. Section one studies the production of petroleum extracts in Suez Governorate. It also studies the production rate and the structural development of different distillation laboratories; that is besides the different extracts produced in each laboratory. Section two studies the electric energy in Suez Governorate and investigates the development of energy production, the consumption rate, the capacity rate, quality rate, the amount and kinds of fuel consumed.

Chapter II investigates the transportation of energy in Suez Governorate.Section one focuses on the transportation of petroleumextracts depending on the kind of the product and the amount and means of transportation. Section two studies the capacity of the transportation network.

Chapter III studies energy consumption in Suez Governorate. Section One studies the consumption of natural gas and petroleum extracts based on the kind of extract, the means of transportation, the rate of consumption of different petroleum extracts—compared with other governorates in the country; this is besides the consumption of natural gas as distributed among the different economic sectors and the rate of consumption of natural gas.Section three investigates the consumption of electric energy in Suez Governorate. It focuses on the development of the consumption of electric energy; the geographic distribution of the consumption of electric energy in the municipalities; the geographic distribution of the consumption of electricity, the increase in the number of subscribers in the different municipalities and the rate of consumption of electric energy and the average of individual consumption of electricity.

Chapter IV studies the geographical factors that influence energy in Suez Governorate. Section one investigates the geographical factors that promote petroleum distillation industry, and electric energy stations in the area under study. Section two investigates the geographical factors that influences the transportation of energy of all its types—both the natural and the human factors.

Chapter V investigates the problems of energy and its future in Suez Governorate. Section one tackles the main energy problems. These have been identified as: problems facing the petroleum distillation industry and problems facing the production of electric energy and suggested solutions. Section two focuses on the future of energy in Suez Governorate: studying the possibilities of developing traditional and renewable energy resources in the governorate. Finally, the thesis concluded with the major recommendations which could enhance the development of the area of study concerning the geography of energy.
