بدأت الجغرافية في العقود الأخيرة تتوسع بموضوعات دراستها، وبدأت تركـّز على الدراسات التطبيقية لاسيما المتعلقة بالتنمية التي إزداد الإهتمام بها في الآونة الأخيرة، بعدما حققت آثاراً إيجابية في رفاه السكان وتقدّم الأقاليم والدول. وبما إن الجغرافية تدرس الظواهر وعلاقتها بالمكان، وإن التنمية لها حيزها المكاني فقد وجدت جغرافية التنمية وتطوّرت في دراسة الموضوعات التي تعالج مشكلات المجتمع ومتطلباته المختلفة. فتدرس جغرافية التنمية العلاقة بين عناصر البيئة الطبيعية والإمكانات الاقتصادية وتوزيعها المكاني وإمكانية إستثمارها لخدمة السكان، من خلال إتباع ستراتيجية تنموية فاعلة وتخطيط إقليمي ناجح، لذا فإن الجغرافية والتنمية يشتركان في دراسة كل شيء من شأنه يخدم الإنسان ويعمّر الأرض.تضمّن البحث أربعة مباحث تناول الأول منها مفهوم الجغرافية، وبحث الثاني مفهوم التنمية والفرق بين التنمية والنمو وأهداف التنمية وأبعادها، وقد تعرّض المبحث الثالث إلى جغرافية التنمية والتخطيط الإقليمي، أمّا المبحث الرابع فكان حول أهمية الجغرافية في التنمية والتخطيط الإقليمي وختم البحث بالخلاصة والاستنتاجات وقائمة بالمصادر التي أعتمد البحث عليها.

Geographical began expanding in recent decades subjects studied, and began to focus on applied studies, especially related to development that increased attention in recent times, after it posted a positive effect on the welfare of the population and provide the regions and countries. As the geographical studying phenomena and their relationship to the place, and that development have their space spatial development has found a geographical and developed in the study of topics that deal with various community problems and requirements. Examines the development of the relationship between the natural environment and economic potential of the elements and their spatial distribution and the possibility of geographic invested to serve the population, through an effective development strategy and planning regional successful, so the geographic and development share in the study of everything that would serve the human and deepens the ground. The research includes four articles: the concept of geography, the concept of development and the different between development and growth as well as the aim of development and its dimensions, the geography of the regional development and planning and the importance of the regional development and planning, respectively. The research is ended with the conclusion and the bibliography.
